It was the weekend of March 6, 7, and 8 that we visited the Morgantown/Tygart Lake area.   It was the weekend before all hell broke loose with the Corona thing.  Fortunately, we were all healthy and only came home with fond memories.  My friends, Anne Hoffman, Jim Kearns, and Douglas Pollitt went with me and we visited a bunch of falls in a couple of days.  The highlight was Sunday, when we met up with John Horne II, who led us out to a few falls in Valley Falls State Park.  It was a good day and we managed to knock off four falls on that one day get together.  Twin Falls, 27′ Falls, and Burnt Cabin Run.  They had been on my list for awhile.  We also managed Shower Bath Falls on the way home.  All in all a great day with great friends.

Valley Falls State Park is located north of Grafton, W.V. From US 50, follow SR 310 north and watch for the signs to Valley Falls State Park. This is a very nice and clean park and there is lots to shoot in the area. Long river shots as well as many wide angle and isolation shots of the falls. This falls is river wide and several tiers. There are some nice isolation shots to be had here.

Saturday, we went looking for the waterfall in Terra Alta on Salt Lick Creek.  Unfortunately, that didn’t work out because of weather, snow pack (6″ from the night before) and time.  But we will be going back there with a bit better time schedule to explore.  At least we found out where it is and how to get to it.

Failing that, we decided to cross the state line to visit Swallow Falls in Maryland.  That whole day was an adventure and the reward justified the time and effort to get there.  This mountain park is located nine miles north of Oakland, Maryland and contains some of Maryland’s most breathtaking scenery. The Youghiogheny River flows along the park’s borders, passing through shaded rocky gorges and creating rippling rapids. Muddy Creek Falls is a crashing 53-foot waterfall – a spectacular sight. Tall hemlocks dominate the silent woods. The 1 1/4 mile trail through S​wallow Falls guides hikers to some of the most breath-taking scenery in Western Maryland.  There are three nice falls in the park.  Swallow, Muddy Creek, and Tolliver Falls.

We also stopped at the Cool Springs Park on our way to Tunnelton and out to Terra Alta.  If you’re ever in the neighborhood, totally worth a detour.
